Bags are packed, the boys are meeting for our last beer tonight before the big off Wednesday morning - Stu looks like a racing whippet, Paul something out of the 60's, and god knows what Al looks like - we haven't seen him for months!!

  5. Thanks for the messages so far, and the extremely generous donations everyone on my just giving site!

From the various texting and phone calls today, I think most of Warwick have been trying to set up a blog or Tweet - I hope you "LEJOGGERS" have managed to sort it all out now - These guys are cycling from lands end to John OG in 9 days..Nutters!

Sticky, I disagree with your comment....you are not bone idle mate..

Dad, it must be a Senior Service thing, but I think the joke is a "trunk" call!!

Ellwood, thanks for popping in today to have a laugh ....I can hear the cheers from here!

Anyway, must put the bag in the car now, as I'm off at 4am - There are still good odds that Dr Gorgeous wont make it to the airport..will keep you posted..

  9. I have every faith in you guys making it after the arduous training programme you have put yourselves through over the last 6 months, those 2 hour walks in the highlands of warwickshire followed by a few bottles of wine are sure to be a perfect preparation for a 6 hour a day back to back camping trek! Suggest you all take up Jez's weekly viagra pills to help you get up!

    good luck all

  16. Loud & clear Jo any more news?

  17. Still a bit confused about blogging, I seem to have two on the go!!! No news I am afraid, think despite having all the communication technology known to man they remain silent!

  18. Just had word.

Intermittent signal ! (Never!) . Boys are in high spirits walking at 10,000 feet through the clouds ( nothing new for Jez there then). All well slight headaches ( withdrawal symptoms - Kili alcohol free/ altitude sickness? ) .

    Good to hear from them

  19. Great news! They can only go up.

  20. Texts from the boys are few and far between, the reception is poor, however Stuart has earned the top spot managing to make a quick phone call to his beloved.

They are now climbing at altitude (14000ft) which according to the itinerary I have is a day ahead, perhaps they are confused!! They are all reportedly fine, slight headaches and shortness of breath has not dampened their spirits!

It is now cold at night (as reported by SH, Chocolate Wood clearly was insufficient preparation) . Those high tech sleeping bags and down jackets will no doubt be tested to the full. They have moved from Moorland and forest habitat now into Alpine desert(!) and are at the Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall.

Hopefully one of the 16 porters will be able to fill their hot water bottles for them and tuck them in!! Preferably not the guy carrying the portaloo!! (no, seriously!)

  21. Silence is golden, no news must be good news!!

Assuming all going well, the boys are tucked up in bed as I blog. ( well in tents, on sleeping mats, in sleeping bags, wearing their down jackets and woolly hats, with bottles to wee into so they dont have to leave their tents, as its too cold for winkies up there at night !!) They will be rudely awakened at 11.30 pm tonight for the final push to the summit, the idea is to be there in time for the sunrise which is, apparently , spectacular.

The last leg climbs from 4750m to the summit at 5895m and covers a distance of some 6km, so that is heavy going and clearly the most demanding section of the route, consisting of stone scree until 5618m and then snow all the way to Uhuru Peak at 5895. ( Sounds like something off Star Trek ! ) This will take somewhere in the region of 6 - 8 hours so just as we open our eyes to Monday morning and the school run they should have made it!!

    Virtual blog ends.

As they descend tomorrow networks can kick in and I can tell you what has really happened !! Better stilll they can , night , night Jo x

  22. How typical is that, just climbing into bed and texts come flying through. The boys are all well and on the way to the summit!! Yippee!

They started early this morning ( this is real, not made up by me, so pay attention) walked for 6 hrs to base camp, then rested . Their journey to the summit will take approx 7 hrs and they started at 11pm their time (9pm here), they are currently at 5000m and there is ice everywhere, and its very cold, the walking is hard going and presumably too cold to text any more,(iphones and gloves just dont work!!) BUT they are in good spirits. ( Obviously looking forward to the cuppa promised once they have descended back to camp approx 6 hours down !!)

Will keep you posted as we hear, Team Extreme from Warwickshire are on their way!!

  23. Well done Jo for keeping all up to date. Can't sleep what with all that talk about frozen winkies etc...enough to give me nightmares!

Anyway, I agree, spirits seem high despite cold conditions...so much for Al's prediction of global warming, bet he's glad of those particularly attractive thermal tights now!

Can't wait for the next update of their adventure, very exciting to think they are hours away from reaching the summit.

    Sleep tight, Fi x

  24. Well, thanks to Fi we can tell you all that the boys reached the summit at 6 am this morning and "oh my god it is beautiful" (their words not ours).

It was very cold, but clearly Als nimble fingers are more resistant to the cold as he managed to continue to text throughout the night !!

Jez reported that he couldnt feel his feet and was finding it hard to breathe, I dont think he appreciated me telling him that he didnt breathe through his feet so whats the problem!

Team Extreme made it, a feat of teamwork and preparation, we are all very excited for them and cant wait to see the photos and video diary!!

  25. Well done boyz!!!
Don't forget, it's vital that you all take the Viagra at night. It may not seem any use now, but it will stop you from rolling down the mountain in your sleep. Thinking of you all. Tim

  26. Well communication restored, the boys are knackered (or naked according to al, clearly spelling ability not a prerequisite for surgeons!)

They arrived back at Kibo hut, mid morning for a well earned cuppa, having trekked for approx 12 hours, and then trekked for a further 10 k to Horombo where they will spend their last night under canvas, soft drinks and beer are available here !!

Jez and Al have been roomies and both are concerned that they smell really bad (you can spot the girls!) in fact all they are texting about is the prospect of soap and hot water!

Its very clear they have had an amazing experience but think the cold and fatigue have taken its toll. It will only take a couple of beers and they will sleep like babies (smelly ones)!

  27. guys - well done one and all! Great result - I know you will all be gutted that England Ladies Rugby lost to New Zealand Ladies 13-10 in the world cup - dont worry ,I videod it for you!

Enjoy the R&R and see you all soon.

  28. Final comment from the blog - the boys have had an amazing experience, although there is not much mention of lets do it again next year!!

After a days R and R, celebrating Jezzas birthday, they are finally on their way home, They will no doubt be trying to blag an upgrade after their efforts, they are all feeling the effects. After a punishing push to the top the descent back down to the park gate has rendered their already tired legs completely useless, sadly this cooincided with a spell in the bar!! One suspects those wee bottles may still be handy, and prevent needless transitions from seating or lying to standing or moving!

We managed a phone call this morning to sing Happy Birthday to Jez, the girls were very excited to learn that Daddy was having breakfast with loads of monkeys and one had stolen his toast, I remonstrated with Jez it was not kind to refer to his fellow Trekkies (underttones of Star Trek again I am afraid) in this way!!

A dubious photo of Jez (a la Bear Grylls) has been emailed, sporting an alarming amount of facial hair, all those on school pick up tomorrow should look out, he claims it will still be there! Jez said, that in true Dr Gorgeous fashion, Al looked like George Michael with his designer stubble, maybe they have become close sharing a tent for the last 6 days! Somewhat disappointingly Stu and Paul shaved every day , one of the advantages of having someone carry the equivalent of an en suite up the mountain with you!

Team Extreme land in Birmingham tomorrow mid morning, I think we are all looking forward to their version of events, the photos and THE VIDEO DIARY!!! Stu and Jezs love of an audience is well recorded, it promises much!!!
